Spalted Sycamore Coasters

Spalted timber is rare enough that most woodworkers never encounter it. When it does occur, it leaves behind a map of dark lines and tonal shifts across the grain that no saw, no stain, and no amount of effort could replicate. Nature did something here that craft alone cannot.

Each coaster is cut as a cross-section from a spalted sycamore branch, revealing the full growth ring pattern of the tree — years of quiet growth exposed in a single slice. Hand-oiled and finished individually, then fitted with felt pads to protect whatever surface they're placed on.

Sycamore has a naturally pale, close-grained character that makes the spalting particularly striking — dark lines threading through a clean, almost luminous background. No set will look like another. Within a set of four, no two coasters will match exactly. This is not a flaw in the process. It is the process.

Made in Cornwall from locally sourced timber.
